Farbstifte auf Seide – 45×45 cm | 2019
The starting point for this work are the classic Hermes scarves, which are traditionally printed by hand, with the ‘Gavroche’ with an edge length of 45cm being chosen as the basis for this work. The individual, decorative and valuable aspect of these scarves is interpreted and exaggerated in this work, in that the implemented scarf is stripped of its functions and thus has a purely decorative character and is seen less as a fashionable clothing accessory and more as a unique work of art.
The work is executed with coloured pencils on silk and then hand-rolled. Animal materials such as furs and feathers serve as motifs, as these emphasise the valuable, decorative aspect of this work. Due to the high level of detail and the materials/techniques chosen, the cloth is a valuable unique piece, which is not designed to be worn on the body, but for the exhibition context.
The motif and level of detail are inspired by classic examples in art history, such as the Arnolfini Portrait by the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck, in which textiles such as fur-trimmed clothing are used to signal wealth.
