Melt

3 objects made of PVA film, netting, threads, beetroot, turmeric & leaves, each approx. 9×5 cm | 2020

The focus of this work is the topic of (over)production with the question: ‘How can analogue art be created and consumed without accumulating objects?’ This question is shaped by current issues that were intensified during the lockdown. On the one hand, the rejection of consumption and overproduction, but on the other hand, the desire to consume art, which only became really apparent with the temporary closure of exhibitions and museums.

Added to this is my personal urge to create analogue art.

These three points were combined in this work. Three exciting objects were created from PVA* film, which, through various manipulations of the material in combination with plant components (beetroot, turmeric, leaves), are reminiscent of organic forms (cnidarians, buds, seed pods, etc.), but also appear artificial. The actual plan was to dissolve the objects in water in a final act at an exhibition or presentation. Due to current events, the dissolution was instead recorded on video. The video is played in fast motion; the melting process took about 200 minutes. Only vegetable residues remain. In the form of a cycle, the desire to create and consume art was satisfied without producing any tangible residues.
