textile object made of dyed cotton and linen – 250 cm x 150 cm | 2019
First, selected dyeing techniques with natural dyes were tested and examined for their applicability within the artist’s own work. The following dyes were tested on bleached and unbleached cotton, linen, farmhouse linen, silk and blended fabrics: lavender, blue wood, blue wood/indigo, pomegranate, avocado, indigo, roobois/black tea (from left to right). The fabric samples were pre-treated with soda, soy, tara or alum and tara.
In a subsequent artistic step, a textile surface composition was created. In contrast to the laboratory-like approach of the preliminary study, additional and residual products from the colour experiments were seemingly randomly combined to create fabrics, colour baths, pretreatments and dyeing techniques, and individual pieces were made from them, which were then combined to form a large textile surface. The realisation is reminiscent of classic repair techniques such as BORO.
